NAKURU – The Nakuru County Department of Infrastructure is undertaking significant upgrades to local roads as part of the Imarisha Barabara Programme, aiming to enhance agricultural productivity by improving transport links between farms and markets.
According to Kenya News Agency, County Engineer Michael Kamau highlighted the potential impact of better infrastructure on the agricultural sector, including increased productivity and improved living standards for farmers. He identified road improvements as a catalyst for economic development and sustainability within the agricultural domain, which forms the backbone of the region’s economy.
Kamau provided insights into the grading of the Mogotio-Kinoyo road in Soin Ward, Rongai Sub-county, and its anticipated benefits in terms of access to social amenities and economic activities. During an inspection covered by KNA, he stated that the road development program would be an annual initiative, utilizing equipment efficiently to complete segments of roads before proceeding to the next.
The County Engineer also shed light on the broader economic benefits of the improved road network, including facilitating trade and commerce by easing the transport of goods and services. Gideon Rotich, a local farmer, shared his perspective on the necessity of reliable road access, especially during the rainy season when farm produce often remains trapped on farms due to impassable roads.
Moreover, Kamau stressed that enhancing the quality of life for farmers through infrastructure development was a key responsibility of the devolved government units. This encompassed not just roadways, but also housing, sanitation, and access to clean water, contributing to making rural areas more attractive for living and working.
