NACADA Commends NGAOs for Progress in Combating Drug and Alcohol Abuse in Nyanza

KISII — Esther Okenye, Nyanza Regional Manager for the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), praised the efforts of National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs) in leading the fight against drug abuse and illicit alcohol in the region.

According to Kenya News Agency, During the commemoration of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Ms. Okenye highlighted the significant progress Nyanza has made, now ranking 5th nationally in substance use, an improvement from its previous 3rd position. She credited the NGAOs with spearheading initiatives that have seen a decrease in alcohol and drug consumption despite the region's population growth. "If all of us come together to kick out the brewing in our homes and let it be a regulated trade, we will go a long way in fighting illicit alcohol," she stated.

Ms. Okenye also noted the formation of a Technical Working Group (TWG) in Kisii County, comprising various organizations dedicated to preventing alcohol and drug abuse. Aligning with this year's theme, 'The Evidence is clear, invest in prevention,' the partnership focuses on preventive measures to mitigate the risk to community members.

Concern was raised about the rise in cannabis use among students, with rates in the region exceeding the national average. Ms. Okenye emphasized the importance of engaging youth in prevention efforts, encouraging them to spread awareness among their peers.

Violet Moke from the Kisii County Department of Social Services also affirmed their commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to address substance abuse challenges in the county.
