Nay Pyi Taw: Myanmar commemorated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on Tuesday by organizing sports events, including the Para Games, as revealed by a sports official to Xinhua. This event is part of the annual Para Games, sponsored by the Myanmar Paralympic Sports Federation under the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, which coincides with the 5th National Sports Festival in Nay Pyi Taw.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the federation will join this festival to mark the occasion, as confirmed by Min Naing Oo, joint secretary of the federation. He stated that during the festival, participants will compete in four events: swimming, sitting volleyball, chess, and athletics, with 142 athletes from six regions and states taking part.
Htet Htet Aye, a 42-year-old para-athlete specializing in athletics and a polio survivor, expressed appreciation for the acknowledgment of disabled athletes in Myanmar. She highlighted the importance of recognizing and awarding disabled athletes to foster incl
usion in the sports sector. “Receiving awards honors our hard work and gives us a sense of accomplishment, demonstrating that we truly reap the rewards of our efforts,” she said, noting how sports have enhanced her mental and physical strength.
Another athlete, 23-year-old Naw Laular Win, encouraged disabled individuals by asserting their ability to contribute to the country through sports. She emphasized that disability should not prevent anyone from achieving their potential: “A human is human, whether disabled or not. Don’t stay at home, step outside, and we will see how many things we are capable of achieving.”
Aung Myint Myat, a 32-year-old para swimmer, shared his experiences of participating in Asian and ASEAN events, having earned 34 medals in international competitions over seven years. He acknowledged the government’s support based on achievements, which enables him to provide for his family despite challenges with his legs. “Although I have challenges with my legs, my hands are strong. So, I am f
ocused to the best of my ability,” he said, emphasizing the importance of focusing on one’s strengths.
He further encouraged others by stating, “We are proving that although we may have physical challenges, we can still support our families and achieve great things. With determination, effort, and perseverance, everything is possible.”
