Mweshipandeka Secondary School learners displayed URTI symptoms

Health authorities have not yet determined what caused flu-like symptoms amongst 69 learners of Mweshipandeka Secondary School in the Oshana Region on Saturday, but confirmed that all affected learners tested negative for Covid-19.

The Health Director in the Oshana Region, Johanna Haimene, told Nampa on Sunday that all the affected learners presented with symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection (URTI).

“Covid tests were done and no positive result was detected,” she said.

Haimene noted that none of the learners were admitted to a hospital and gave her reassurance that there was no immediate cause for serious concern amongst the public.

Oshana Region Education Director Hileni Amukana meanwhile said they are aware of the matter and urged the public not to panic.

Amukana said they are awaiting directives from the Ministry of Health and Social Services to guide their next steps.
