Mombasa, Kenya – The coastal city of Mombasa welcomed the MV Bolette cruise ship, carrying 859 tourists, marking a significant boost to the region’s tourism sector. This arrival is especially notable as it represents the sixth and final cruise ship docking at the Port of Mombasa for the current season.
According to Kenya News Agency, who spoke to the media at the Kenya Ports Authority Cruise Terminal in Mombasa, this event underscores the potential for the six coastal counties to collaboratively capitalize on the cruise ship tourism sector. He emphasized the importance of regional cooperation in harnessing the opportunities presented by cruise tourism.
Tourists from the MV Bolette were greeted by traditional dancers upon arrival, as captured in a photo by Haniel Mengistu. A portion of these tourists embarked on various expeditions, visiting destinations like Shimba Hills, Tsavo, and Diani, while others explored the city of Mombasa.
Chirchir further stated that KTB is actively working to revive cruise tourism in Kenya, with ongoing campaigns to attract more vessels to the country. He revealed that about 13 ships are expected by April of next year, showcasing a concerted marketing effort to boost this sector.
Dr. Sudi Mwasinago, KPA General Manager Cargo Operations, speaking on behalf of KPA Managing Director Captain William Ruto, highlighted the critical role of the port in the revival of the cruise ship business in Kenya. He pointed out that the port serves as a crucial interface between land and sea for these vessels and plays a supportive and facilitative role in this type of business.
Mwasinago also noted the economic benefits that the port and the wider economy derive from the cruise ship business, emphasizing the positive impact on the local and national economy.
Mohammed Osman, Mombasa County Trade, Tourism, and Culture Executive, lauded the arrival of MV Bolette as a testament to Mombasa’s status as a premier tourist destination. He mentioned that the city is bustling with tourists during the festive season, with many visiting beaches and other tourist sites within Mombasa.
One of the city’s key attractions, the refurbished Mama Ngina Waterfront Park, is hosting the Mombasa International Festival, which started on Christmas Day and will continue until December 31.
Osman assured that the Mombasa County Government is committed to collaborating with KPA and other stakeholders in the tourism industry to further enhance Mombasa’s position as Kenya’s leading tourist destination.
The MV Bolette, part of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, arrived from Port Victoria in the Seychelles carrying passengers of diverse nationalities and 1,000 crew members. After an overnight stay in Mombasa, the ship is set to depart for Zanzibar, continuing its Indian Ocean voyage.
