Murang’a to Receive Infrastructure Boost with KURA’s Road Upgrade Project

Murang’a, Kenya – The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) is set to commence the upgrading of nine crucial roads in and around Murang’a town, with an investment of approximately Sh1 billion.

According to Kenya News Agency, this initiative aims to enhance the infrastructure of the county’s headquarters and its connectivity to neighboring areas, thereby stimulating economic growth and attracting investors.

Kiharu Member of Parliament, Ndindi Nyoro, highlighted the significance of this project for Murang’a town, stating it would elevate the town’s status, benefit local businesses, and attract new investments. During recent public participation forums, Nyoro emphasized that Murang’a’s development has been hindered by inadequate infrastructure. He noted that the town’s hilly terrain necessitates improved and upgraded infrastructure to foster development and make the area an appealing destination for investment.

The project has already commenced with the construction of some roads, aiming for completion of several before the end of the current financial year. “These roads will significantly benefit the people of Murang’a and the surrounding areas, as the value of land on the town’s outskirts is expected to rise,” Nyoro mentioned.

Additionally, the upgrade includes enhancements to the Mukuyu open-air market, where pavements will be fitted with cabros to create a more conducive environment for traders. Nyoro encouraged residents near the project sites to support the construction, reassuring them that the design ensures no private land will be appropriated.

Abdul Rashid, Director of KURA, conveyed that the project will generate employment opportunities for hundreds of locals, with a directive for contractors to prioritize local workers. Rashid also appealed to residents with structures on road reserves to remove them to facilitate the road upgrades, emphasizing the project’s transformative potential for Murang’a town.

Local resident Winfred Wangu expressed support for the project, anticipating increased land value and more residential investments at the town’s outskirts. She noted the current challenges of impassable roads during rainy seasons, which discourage investments around the town, and commended the government for prioritizing Murang’a’s development.

This infrastructure project represents a significant step forward in improving the quality of life for Murang’a residents and fostering economic development within the region.
