Murang’a Lawmakers Commit to Completing Mau Mau Road Construction

Murang’a, Kenya – Members of Parliament from Murang’a County have promised the community that the long-stalled construction of the Mau Mau Road will be completed soon. During a public sensitization forum at Kanyenyaini Market on Saturday, the legislators discussed the future of the project and the allocation of funds intended for its completion.

According to Kenya News Agency, the project faced significant delays after construction halted in 2022 when contractors abandoned the site due to payment issues. This interruption has left many road sections nearly impassable, especially during the rainy seasons, impacting local residents’ ability to transport produce and travel within the county. The road, originally a key initiative of the previous Jubilee government, spans approximately 500 kilometers, linking the counties of Nyeri, Murang’a, Kiambu, and Nyandarua and is crucial for enhancing agricultural activities and eco-tourism near the Aberdare Forest.

During the meeting, MP Kihungi mentioned that Sh5 billion has been earmarked in the 2024/2025 budget to fund the road’s completion. He highlighted the recent approval of additional funds by Ndindi Nyoro, Chair of the Parliamentary Committee for Budget, to restart the construction. He assured residents that contractors would return to the site by the next financial year and urged patience from the community.

Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu emphasized the economic importance of the Mau Mau Road for the counties on both the east and west sides of the Aberdare ranges. He reassured constituents that Murang’a leaders are actively working to ensure the project’s completion within the upcoming financial year.

Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina also spoke at the forum, encouraging local support for the government as it pushes forward with plans to complete not only the Mau Mau Road but other stalled projects across the county.
