Murang’a County Hosts Inaugural Children’s Assembly

Murang’a, Kenya – The Murang’a County recently witnessed a landmark event with the first-ever County Children’s Assembly, organized by the Directorate of Children’s Services. Held at a local school, the assembly brought together child delegates from the nine sub-counties across Murang’a, providing a unique platform for them to voice their concerns and contribute to policy formulation.

According to Kenya News Agency, the Murang’a East Children’s Officer, the Kenya Children’s Assembly (KCA) initiative, previously conducted at sub-county levels, has now been elevated to the county level. Mutegi emphasized the importance of including children in discussions about issues that affect them, highlighting the role of the KCA as a critical venue for children to express their views and influence government decision-making and policies related to their welfare.

The child delegates, aged between 11 to 16 years, engaged in detailed discussions about various challenges they face in their localities. One of the primary concerns raised was the neglect and abuse by parents and caregivers, often attributed to alcohol and drug abuse. The delegates presented differing opinions on how to address such situations, ranging from the removal of children from unsafe environments to counseling and rehabilitation for the affected parents and caregivers.

Other issues highlighted by the children included the long distances they have to travel to access healthcare services and education. The delegates expressed the need for better-equipped hospitals and schools to ensure access to quality services.

The assembly concluded with the election of county representatives who will hold various offices for the next two years. Additionally, the children participated in workshops focused on life skills such as self-awareness, effective communication, and stress management, further empowering them to be active participants in their communities.
