MPs Highlight Advances in Justice and Agriculture in Lunda-Norte

Lunda-norte: The Members of the Parliament (MP) of Lunda-Norte provincial circle said on Thursday that the province has made significant progress in the sectors of Justice, Agriculture, and Energy, factors that have been decisive for its growth and socio-economic development.

According to Angola Press News Agency, in recent years, the Government has made major investments in the energy sector, leading to the rehabilitation and expansion of the Luachimo hydroelectric dam. This development increased its production capacity from 8 to 34 megawatts of electricity, with a total investment exceeding US$212 million. In addition, a photovoltaic park was constructed in Lucapa with a production capacity of 7.19 megawatts, funded 80% by Sweden and 20% by South Africa, costing 19 million, 706 thousand, and 428 euros.

Moreover, three more photovoltaic plants are underway in the municipalities of Cafunfo, Cambulo, and Cuango, with capacities of 41 MW, 38.6 megawatts, and 26 MW, respectively. These projects form part of a rural electrification program targeting the establishment of 15 solar energy parks across Lunda-Norte.

Elisa Solange Paxe, the spokesperson for the MP of the provincial circle, communicated to the press that these investments have enhanced access to public grid energy at affordable rates for citizens in remote areas. After visiting various municipalities, the MP observed that despite financial constraints, the Government continues to prioritize the improvement of basic social services.

The Justice sector has also seen advancements, with expanded service capabilities allowing for the issuance of Identity Cards in nearly all municipalities. In agriculture, the MP noted a successful agricultural and livestock project in L³vua, under the National Plan for the Promotion of Grain Production, which has produced substantial yields of soybeans, corn, and beans within a year.

The expansion of agricultural land in the province now covers over 300,000 hectares. Expectations for the current agricultural season include a harvest of more than 2 million tons of products, cultivated by over 200,000 peasant families.

However, the MP also communicated to the government the need for improved water systems, resumption of halted projects, and expansion of educational and healthcare infrastructure in Cambulo, Lucapa, and L³vua. The group of deputies recommended including these stalled projects in the General State Budget for 2026.

Over four days, the MPs, including three from the MPLA and two from UNITA, inspected sectors such as Justice and Human Rights, Agriculture, Economic and Productive Development, and mining in the municipalities of L³vua, Dundo, Lucapa, and Cambulo.
