MPLA President Advocates for Greater Grassroots Representation in Central Committee

Luanda: The MPLA President Joo Louren§o proposed on Thursday that at least 15 percent of the members of the Central Committee and intermediate committees of the party, to be elected at the next congress, should be grassroots members, specifically from the Party Action Committees (CAP).

According to Angola Press News Agency, Louren§o articulated this proposal during the 10th Ordinary Session of the MPLA Central Committee. He emphasized that the initiative aims to ensure fairness in candidate selection, value grassroots work, and allow those who experience daily life and drive the MPLA's dynamism and vitality to be strongly represented in the party's leadership bodies, including the Central Committee. Louren§o expressed concern that many capable members are often overlooked in favor of others who secure positions through influence peddling.

The MPLA's Central Committee is composed of 693 members, 103 of whom are from its Political Bureau. Louren§o's proposal is seen as a step towards inclusivity and accountability within the party's leadership structure.

During his speech, Louren§o highlighted the ongoing efforts to engage with citizens through rallies across the country. He noted that while rallies are well-attended, they do not guarantee electoral success. Therefore, he called for enhanced political work involving direct interaction with citizens, particularly through door-to-door engagement and voter identification.

Joo Louren§o stressed the need for the party to refine its statistical data, develop effective strategies for member growth and mobilization, and adequately prepare its agents and campaign workers. He also underscored the importance of maintaining communication with various segments of Angolan society, particularly community and opinion leaders, to bolster the party's political and electoral mobilization efforts.
