Moxico Governor Mourns Passing of Influential Angolan Leader Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos

Luanda: Moxico Governor Ernesto Muangala expressed deep dismay on Thursday at the death of Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, also known as "Nando," who passed away due to illness at the Girassol Clinic.

According to Angola Press News Agency, Muangala addressed the press, highlighting the deceased's role as a prominent patriot and his efforts towards consolidating national independence and peace in Angola. Muangala extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the MPLA leadership on behalf of the Provincial Committee of the MPLA and the government of Moxico province.

Born on March 5, 1950, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos joined the MPLA in 1971. After Angola's independence in 1975, he started his career with the People's Police Corps, advancing to division chief by 1978. From 1982 to 1985, he led the National Police and was later appointed Deputy Minister of the Interior and head of the Information Services (SINFO), playing a strategic role in security and intelligence.

In December 2002, he was appointed Prime Minister, a position he held until 2008 under the then-current Constitution. The approval of a new constitution in 2010 abolished the position of prime minister, leading to his appointment as the first vice president of Angola, a role he served in until 2012.

Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos also served as president of the National Assembly from 2008 to 2010 and again from 2012 to 2022, reinforcing his political influence and legislative leadership. His death at the Girassol Clinic followed an urgent evacuation. He held a law degree from Agostinho Neto University, earned in 2009, which complemented his political acumen with legal expertise.

He was recognized for his contributions to state development and the consolidation of Angola's institutions, marking a significant phase in the country's recent history. In acknowledgment of his achievements, President Joao Louren§o awarded him the Independence Class Medal during the 50th anniversary of National Independence on November 11.
