Mouhoun/Religion: CERFI Emphasizes Dialogue to Enhance Social Cohesion Between Islam and Traditions

D©dougou: The regional coordination of the Circle of Islamic Studies, Research and Training (CERFI) of Bankui and Sourou organized a regional conference on Sunday, May 3, 2026. The event, held in D©dougou, aimed at promoting constructive dialogue and strengthening social cohesion amidst ongoing security and socio-cultural challenges. The conference was themed "Islam and Traditions".

According to Burkina Information Agency, the event was aimed at raising public awareness of common moral and social values to help strengthen social cohesion and peaceful coexistence in Burkina Faso. Abdoulaye Zerbo, representing the sponsor, presided over the ceremony. The event was attended by administrative, religious, and customary authorities, along with numerous faithful and supporters.

Mr. Zerbo highlighted the timely nature of the conference, which provided a framework for reflection, allowing participants to gain a better understanding of the foundations of the Muslim religion. The conference also focused on valuing traditions that align with Islamic principles and identifying practices that may need to be re-examined.

The regional coordinator of CERFI Bankui-Sourou, Raouda Ramd©, emphasized the importance of an informed, calm, and meaningful public debate on the relationship between Islamic faith and traditional practices. He stated that the initiative aims to promote a better understanding of the interactions between Islam and traditions, contributing to social cohesion and peace.

Discussions at the conference were led by the imam of CERFI, Moussa Koudougou, who addressed confusions present in contemporary debates, notably on social networks. He pointed out that some opinions mistakenly equate the struggle against imperialism with opposition to revealed religions, noting that imperialism is rooted in exploitation, which is distinct from religions and civilizations that serve as spiritual and cultural reference points.

Mr. Koudougou advocated for a clear distinction between political realities and religious foundations to prevent conflations that could exacerbate social tensions. He stressed that condemning imperialism should not justify rejecting religious or cultural identities or attacking practices linked to a particular civilization.

The imam urged participants to adopt a nuanced and responsible approach to understanding social phenomena. He also highlighted historical instances of harmonious coexistence between Islam and traditions, clarifying misunderstandings and encouraging constructive dialogue.

Addressing religious and community leaders, Moussa Koudougou underscored their responsibility in maintaining social cohesion. He reminded them that Islam encourages actions that contribute to peace and the strengthening of social bonds.

This regional conference by CERFI in Bankui-Sourou is part of ongoing efforts to consolidate peace, unity, and coexistence in Burkina Faso.
