Mouhoun/Celebration of the Easter Vigil: A Call to a New Life Following the Risen Christ

Dedougou: The Catholic faithful of the Sainte Anne Cathedral in Dedougou celebrated the Easter Vigil on the night of Saturday, April 4, 2026, in an atmosphere of fervor and contemplation, under the presidency of the parish priest, Father Stanislas Balo.

According to Burkina Information Agency, this solemn celebration, considered the culmination of the Christian liturgical year, was marked by the rite of light, the liturgy of the word with nine biblical readings, and the rite of baptism, which saw the integration of new faithful. In his homily, Father Stanislas Balo invited the faithful to embrace the joy of the Resurrection, highlighting it as a symbol of victory over death, evil, and lies, concluding the forty days of Lent.

Father Balo emphasized that all spiritual experiences stem from divine initiative, the progressive revelation of God, and the mission entrusted to believers for the salvation of souls. He drew on the Scriptures to illustrate God's actions of love for His people, from the creation to the liberation of Israel and the calling of the prophets. The Resurrection, he explained, calls Christians to a new life rooted in baptism, characterized by truth, justice, and hope. He urged them to welcome divine mercy and become courageous witnesses of the faith.

He further indicated that the resurrection of Christ, evidenced by the empty tomb and announced in the Scriptures, forms the foundation of Christian hope, stressing that death is merely a passage to eternal life. Father Balo called on the faithful to embrace the peace of the Risen Christ and commit to building a world grounded in faith, hope, and peace. He also announced that the celebration of this resurrection feast resulted in the parish registering 306 new baptisms, including 84 children and 31 couples who regularized their union.

Father Stanislas Balo encouraged the newly baptized to become role models and integrate with other parish groups to rejuvenate the Church. He invited them to participate actively in parish activities, fostering a community spirit and serving as a new breath of God among the faithful.

Among the attendees, Lombo Dayo from the customary chieftaincy of Dedougou shared that his wife's baptism prompted him to regularize their religious union, a step he found deeply satisfying. He advocated for unity between religious denominations and emphasized the importance of social peace in Burkina Faso for development.

Marie T. Coulibaly reminded the congregation that the Easter festival celebrates Christ's resurrection, a core mystery of the Christian faith, prepared by Lent, which is lived in a spirit of conversion, forgiveness, and abandonment of evil deeds. The Easter vigil thus provided an opportunity for spiritual renewal, calling the faithful to live and bear witness to the presence of the risen Christ daily.
