Sabasaba township, Murang’a south sub-county, a woman has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for subjecting her 13-year-old daughter to prostitution. The sentence was handed down at Kenol Law Court by Senior Resident Magistrate Sheila Nyaga.
According to Kenya News Agency, Margaret Wambui, the accused, pleaded guilty to child prostitution charges. The court was told that between December 2022 and October 2023, Wambui forced her daughter to have sex with various men for money. A pre-sentence report from the probation office revealed the disturbing details of the case. The victim’s grandmother became suspicious of her pregnancy and, upon confrontation, learned of the horrific exploitation by her mother.
After the grandmother learned of these circumstances, the matter was reported to the local chief’s office. The chief and assistant chief assisted the grandmother and victim in filing a report at Muthithi police station. A medical examination at Kigumo Health Centre confirmed that the girl was five months pregnant. Wambui was later arrested in Sabasaba town by Kandani police and local authorities.
In the pre-sentence report, the victim detailed how her mother had exploited her for prostitution after separating from her ex-husband. She recounted how Wambui would bring men to their room, forcing her to engage in sexual acts for money and threatening her to keep silent about these abuses. Wambui will now serve a decade in prison for her crimes.
