MOSCOW — Russia officially condemned the recent attack on Donald Trump, expressing its lack of surprise due to the current politically charged atmosphere in the United States ahead of the presidential elections.
According to Burkina Information Agency, who spoke during a telephone press briefing on Sunday, Russia denounces "any manifestation of violence within the framework of political competition." Peskov extended condolences to the family of a victim who was killed during the attack and wished a speedy recovery to all involved. However, he noted the predictability of such violent incidents given the heightened pre-election climate in the U.S. and criticized ongoing American political actions, including support for Ukraine.
Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also commented on the incident, linking it to broader criticisms of U.S. foreign policy, particularly its support for Ukraine amid escalating tensions with Russia. Zakharova suggested on Telegram that the U.S. should reconsider its internal security funding rather than continue its overseas engagements, which she claims foster hatred and conflict.
The discussion around the attack has been further complicated by the implications it carries for the forthcoming U.S. presidential election, where Trump is a candidate. The Kremlin has acknowledged Trump's proposals to end the conflict in Ukraine, viewing them as significant, especially against the backdrop of intense scrutiny from Democratic opponents who challenge his policies towards Russia.
