Morocco Hosts Successful Inaugural African eSports Championships

CASABLANCA — The first African eSports Championships concluded triumphantly on Wednesday in Casablanca, drawing thousands of spectators both in-person at the Mohammed V Sports Complex and online, showcasing the rising talent and popularity of eSports in Africa.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Morocco’s successful hosting of the championships reaffirmed its status as a leading eSports hub on the continent. Egyptian players dominated the event, securing three of the five titles, including PUBG Mobile and MLBB, both men’s and women’s categories. The host nation, Morocco, also performed admirably, clinching second place in PUBG Mobile and MLBB, which earned them spots in the upcoming 2024 Worlds in Riyadh. Tunisia and South Africa were also recognized for their strong performances, underscoring the diverse eSports talent across Africa.

The event was supported by key Moroccan officials, including Mr. Chakib Benmoussa, Minister of National Education, Preschool and Sports, Mr. Mehdi Bensaid, Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication, and Mr. Mohamed Mhidia, Wali of the Casablanca-Settat region. The African eSports Championships, organized by the African eSport Confederation and the International Federation of Electronic Sports in partnership with the Royal Moroccan Federation of Electronic Games, promises to spur further growth and international participation in African eSports.
