Morocco Coach Walid Regraguy Handed Four-Match Suspension by CAF

RABAT, Morocco – Morocco’s Atlas Lions coach Walid Regraguy has been suspended for four matches, two of which are suspended, as per a ruling by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). This decision follows an altercation with the captain of the DR Congo Leopards, Chancel Mbemba.



According to Burkina Information Agency, the CAF Disciplinary Jury delivered its verdict concerning incidents that occurred after the match between Morocco and the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday, January 21, 2024. The match was part of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023.



The CAF Disciplinary Jury found both the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) and the Congolese Federation of Football Association (FECOFA), along with coach Walid Regragui, guilty of separate charges. The verdict included a 20,000 USD fine imposed on the FRMF and an identical fine on the FECOFA. Additionally, Coach Regragui received a suspension for four matches, with two of these suspended over a period of one year, along with a personal fine of 5,000 USD.



Furthermore, the FRMF was fined an additional 10,000 USD for the use of smoke bombs by its supporters during the match. Half of this amount, 5,000 USD, is suspended. The CAF communications director emphasized that these decisions are enforceable upon the expiry of the appeal period, as stipulated in the CAF Disciplinary Code.
