Freetown: The International Moral Guarantors' joint follow-up mission recently visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, where Deputy Minister Francess Piagie Aghali provided an update on the government's progress in implementing the national unity agreement. The update also included insights into the recommendations of the Tripartite Committee report. According to Sierra Leone News Agency, Reverend Shodanke Johnson, Board Chairperson for the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion, initiated discussions within the Foreign Affairs' conference room. Delegations from ECOWAS, the African Union, the United Nations, and Commonwealth entities were welcomed to Freetown for political dialogue focused on strengthening peace efforts. Reverend Johnson, representing his commission, reflected on the accord signed years ago by rival parties, which has since improved coexistence among Sierra Leone's political actors. He emphasized the importance of dialogue, drawing on tradition al African conflict resolution practices and stressing qualities like listening, learning, and advising as crucial for peacemakers. Deputy Minister Alghali reassured the delegation of Sierra Leone's commitment to the national peace accord, known as the Tripartite Agreement, during the two-day review meeting in Freetown. She emphasized the progress made and the government's dedication to peace, security, and national cohesion despite global tensions. Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang, former Vice President of Gambia and Head of Delegation, expressed gratitude for Sierra Leone's hospitality. She noted the mission's objectives to listen, understand progress and challenges, and seek ways forward. She highlighted the international community's supportive role and stressed the importance of unity and shared purpose in advancing Sierra Leone's future. The delegation will engage with civil society, political parties, and the media to discuss governance and collective responsibility. Reflecting on the journey since the uni ty agreement's signing in 2023, Jallow-Tambajang acknowledged challenges but expressed optimism for Sierra Leone's prosperity through unity and peace. The Head of Delegation praised the Ministry's growing influence and the pivotal role played by President Julius Maada Bio and other stakeholders in fostering peace and stability. The mission underscores the importance of cooperation in achieving Sierra Leone's long-term goals.
