CAIRO - Mongolia's State Great Khural, the country's unicameral parliament, launched its first autumn session on Tuesday in Ulan Bator, focusing on comprehensive economic reforms.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the session is significant as it is the first autumn meeting of the newly expanded 126-member parliament, following its establishment after the June parliamentary elections. "During the session, our focus will be on ensuring economic stability, improving the legal framework for investment, increasing foreign investment, diversifying the economy away from reliance on the mining sector, supporting domestic entrepreneurs, and implementing legal reforms to reduce government intervention in the economy," stated Dashzegve Amarbayasgalan, the parliament speaker, during his opening remarks.
The ruling Mongolian People's Party, which secured a narrow victory in the recent elections on June 28, holds 68 seats. The opposition Democratic Party has 42 seats, while the Hun Party has eight seats, and both the Civil Will-Green Party and the National Coalition have secured four seats each. Earlier, in May 2023, the State Great Khural passed significant amendments that increased the number of legislators from 76 to 126, aiming to improve governance and representation.
