MOMBASA—The Mombasa Stars drew 1-1 with the Kibera Black Stars in their final National Super League (NSL) home game of the season, held at Serani Sports Ground on Saturday. The match featured contentious decisions and missed opportunities as both teams sought to climb the league standings.
According to Kenya News Agency, Mombasa Stars took an early lead with Alfred Manigi converting a penalty kick in the first half. However, the advantage was neutralized when Kibera Black Stars were awarded a penalty, successfully taken by Richard Bolo. The decision to award the second penalty was met with significant disapproval from Mombasa Stars, particularly from their head coach, Mohammed Hussein ‘Madaga,’ who argued that the referee’s call unfairly influenced the outcome of the game.
Coach Madaga voiced his displeasure post-match, citing the penalty as an unmerited decision that deprived his team of a crucial win. On the opposing side, Kibera Black Stars’ coach, Edwin Lavatsa, lamented his team’s inability to capitalize on several good chances, viewing the match’s outcome as a loss of two points rather than a gained one.
The draw leaves the Mombasa Stars and Kibera Black Stars in tenth and ninth place in the NSL standings, respectively. With this result, the Mombasa Stars are set to face three consecutive away games in their upcoming NSL schedule.
