Molo: A couple from Turi village, Molo Sub County, who are suffering from cancer, are appealing to well-wishers to help them cater for a huge medical bill arising from their treatment. The couple also has children who need to continue with their education.

According to Kenya News Agency, David Maina is suffering from throat cancer, stage three, while his wife Beatrice Maina is battling breast cancer, stage two. David recounted that his condition began in 2018 with persistent throat pain, which he initially thought could be alleviated with painkillers and traditional herbs. However, when the pain persisted, he sought medical attention at Molo Sub-County Hospital and was later referred to Kenyatta Referral Hospital, where he was diagnosed with throat cancer.

David narrated his struggle to the press, describing how he was forced to sell his valuables, including land and a shop, in an effort to fund his treatment. As the family's breadwinner, this was a desperate move to save his life. He shared that the cancer has drastically affected their economic status, leaving them reliant on neighbors for survival.

In 2020, Beatrice was also diagnosed with breast cancer at Molo Sub-County Referral Hospital, further exacerbating the family's hardships. Beatrice shared her emotional response to her diagnosis, which came at a time when her daughter was preparing for her final secondary school exams. Her daughter, who scored a C plain in the 2023 KCSE, had aspirations of becoming a nurse, but these dreams have been put on hold due to the family's financial burdens. She now takes on casual jobs to pay school fees for her siblings and to ensure her parents can attend hospital checkups.

The Maina family is appealing to Kenyans for financial assistance to cover their ongoing medical expenses and are hopeful that a well-wisher might offer scholarships for their daughters.
