Mohamed Abdi Ware Appointed as IGAD’s Deputy Executive Secretary General

Djibouti – Mohamed Abdi Ware, former Presidential Envoy for Stabilization and Protection of Civilians, has been appointed as the Deputy Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). This announcement was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Djibouti, H.E. Mohamoud Ali Yusuf, who also serves as the Chair of the IGAD Council of Ministers.

According to Somali National News Agency, the appointment of Ware was decided upon by the Assembly of the Heads of States of IGAD during their ordinary summit in June 2023. In a letter addressed to IGAD’s Executive Secretary General, Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, on Sunday, December 10, 2024, the Minister confirmed the appointment. Additionally, the Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism of Somalia, Da’ud Aweis Jama, congratulated Ware on his new role within the regional bloc. Jama described the appointment as a significant win for Somalia, stating, “In a significant win for Somalia, Mohamed Abdi Ware’s appointment as Deputy Executive Secretary General of IGAD elevates Somalia’s influence within the region and internationally, marking a key diplomatic achievement for the Federal Government.”
