Tonkolili: Demands for accelerated gender equality and strengthened protections for women and girls resonated through Tonkolili District as the Ministry of Gender and Children's Affairs (MoGCA) led the charge in commemorating International Women's Day (IWD) on March 8, 2026. The global theme, 'Right. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,' served as a powerful backdrop, uniting government officials, civil society organizations, development partners, and community members in a unified call to dismantle persistent barriers hindering female empowerment. According to Sierra Leone News Agency, the annual March 8 observance transformed into a dynamic platform for advocacy and renewed commitment, spotlighting both hard-won achievements and the stark challenges that remain. Stakeholders acknowledged Sierra Leone's significant advancements in legal institutions and policy frameworks that promote equality. However, they forcefully articulated that cultural norms, restricted access to leadership, and the scourge of gender-based violence (GBV) continue to obstruct the full participation of women and girls in national development. Leading the district-wide engagement, MoGCA, the mandate-bearing body for coordinating GBV response and strengthening child protection systems, orchestrated a series of impactful activities. These commenced with targeted radio discussions on March 7 and 8, followed by intensive community engagements in Magburaka and Matotoka. The centerpiece was a high-energy town hall meeting that galvanized over 150 women and 20 men in critical dialogue.
