Mob Arrested for Malicious Damage in Oshikoto Region

OMUTHIYA—Namibian authorities have detained 20 individuals linked to the destruction of a fence valued at N.dollars 500,000 in the Oshikoto Region. The group allegedly involved 18 men and 2 women, who now face charges related to property damage and public unrest.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Deputy Commissioner Titus Ekandjo, the NamPol Crime Investigations Coordinator, stated that the incident took place last Saturday around noon at Omutsegwondjamba village. The suspects have been detained at Omuthiya Police Station.

The disturbance followed a peaceful protest on September 5, 2024, by local cattle herders and community members over grazing land disputes. They sought answers from the Oshikoto Region’s Governor about the Okashana area, traditionally used for grazing, which had been fenced off by private entities. The protesters, reportedly armed with pangas, axes, and knobkerries, are said to have dismantled and burned the fence using tools like pliers.
