Nairobi: Twelve more Nursing students from Mount Kenya University (MKU) are set to pursue apprenticeship opportunities in German hospitals following a partnership between MKU and other institutions in the European country.
According to Kenya News Agency, this development brings the total number of MKU Nursing students involved in German apprenticeship programs to 25. Previously, the institution sent a team of five students in the first cohort and eight in the second. The students will be departing for Germany to commence their apprenticeship at Hochschule Koblenz University of Applied Sciences, which serves as the primary partner in facilitating these opportunities.
Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi, the University’s Vice Chancellor, announced that all 12 students will leave this Friday and will arrive in Germany the following day. They will immediately begin their apprenticeship at Hochschule Koblenz University of Applied Sciences. Prof. Jaganyi emphasized the valuable global healthcare experience that the students
will gain, equipping them with practical skills and knowledge in varied medical settings.
He also mentioned that an additional 35 students have expressed interest in this initiative and are expected to join Cohort Four for their apprenticeship in Germany. A significant aspect of the program is the German language proficiency requirement, supported by DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), which has provided lecturers to teach the language at the University.
Dr. Mercyline Kamande, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs and Research, stated that the program will expand to include Medical Technologists in radiology, offering more opportunities for health sector workers. She highlighted the introduction of an AI-enabled German Language Training Program to enhance learning efficiency, helping more students qualify for international apprenticeship programs.
Dr. Vincent Gaitho, the University’s Chairman of the Council, emphasized the importance of building networks to succeed in today’s competitive environm
ent, underscoring the strategic value of these partnerships for Kenyan students seeking diverse career paths in Germany and beyond.
