Windhoek: Polling stations in the Katutura Central Constituency in Windhoek recorded low voter turnout and minor disturbances during the midday and early evening hours of the Regional Councils and Local Authorities Elections on Wednesday. Officials noted a strong initial rush when polls opened, but participation significantly dropped off as the day progressed.
According to Namibia Press Agency, at the Theo Katjimune polling station, presiding officer Aurelius David reported brief disruptions caused by intoxicated individuals. "We had individuals who came under the influence of alcohol and they disturbed my polling officials, but they were swiftly escorted out of the station by the police. Other than that, we saw a slow voter turnout after an initial strong start after opening up the station," David stated.
Repeat voter Felix Komeheke attributed the overall low participation to the failure of previous elected councillors to deliver on their campaign pledges. "What do you expect the public to do when the elected people are not delivering on the promises they made when they were campaigning? People have lost faith and that is why you do not see them voting today," said Komeheke.
Other stations within Katutura Central mirrored the pattern observed at Theo Katjimune, experiencing a strong opening turnout followed by a steady decline throughout the day.
