Accra: The Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation officially launched the National WASH Sector Strategic Plan (2026-2035) on Saturday, 14 March 2026, at the De-Wizard Conference Hall in Bo. The event introduced a comprehensive ten-year framework aimed at transforming water, sanitation, and hygiene services nationwide.
According to Sierra Leone News Agency, government officials, local council representatives, development partners, and civil society organizations convened for the ceremony, underscoring a unified commitment to expanding safe water access and enhancing sanitation infrastructure. The initiative signals a pivotal advancement in Sierra Leone's pursuit of improved public health outcomes through sustainable WASH interventions.
Delivering the keynote address, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Dr. Sao-Kpato Isatta Hannah Macarthy, emphasized the collaborative essence of the new roadmap. She characterized the plan as a collective national pledge to secure water resources and elevate living standards for all citizens.
Hon. Charles Abdulai, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, praised the strategy's focus on community-led water management. Victor Hindowa, representing Bo District Council, stressed the necessity of prioritizing rural populations and reinforcing disease prevention mechanisms through dependable water infrastructure.
James Rialc, Country Director for GOAL Sierra Leone, reaffirmed the non-governmental sector's steadfast support, emphasizing that universal WASH coverage demands seamless cooperation among government entities, development agencies, and local communities.
Deputy Minister Francis Alpha Kallon detailed the extensive consultative process underpinning the plan's development. He outlined its role as a guiding framework for sector-wide implementation over the coming decade, reaffirming a resolute commitment to universal access to safe water, dignified sanitation, and enhanced opportunities for healthy, productive lives.
