Ministry of Social Welfare Hosts Family Health Walk to Strengthen Community Unity and Wellness

Freetown: The Ministry of Social Welfare organized a Family Health Walk to promote awareness of family health and unity in the community, as part of its upcoming celebrations for International Family Day. The initiative emphasized family wellness and fostered togetherness among citizens.

According to Sierra Leone News Agency, the walk began at the Aberdeen Turnabout and concluded at SOS Children's Village, Lumley. Participants included families, community leaders, health professionals, government stakeholders, partners, and media representatives, all committed to promoting healthy lifestyles within the family unit. The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of family health and well-being and celebrate families by fostering unity ahead of International Family Day.

Approximately 1,000 people took part, including local leaders, health advocates, and representatives from partner organizations. Minister Melrose Karminty, alongside fellow ministers, cut the ribbon to symbolize a commitment to building strong families and a better Sierra Leone, on behalf of the President and the people. A Family Commitment Wall was also present, where ministers, government stakeholders, partners, local leaders, health advocates, media, and participants signed to pledge their dedication to stronger families and child protection in Sierra Leone.

The event saw the presence of several high-profile ministers, including the Minister of Information and Civic Education, Gender and Children's Affairs, Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Planning and Economic Development, Basic and Senior Secondary Education, acting Minister of Finance, Deputy Minister of Health, and the Resident Minister of the Western Area. They signed the wall and made brief statements affirming their commitment to family welfare and child protection.

Partner organizations in attendance included UNFPA, the Family Support Unit, UN Women, the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, Plan International, ActionAid, CCIS, and St. George Foundation, among others. The Family Health Walk served as an awareness-raising campaign, bringing families together ahead of the grand celebration of International Family Day. The event, themed 'Families, Inequalities, and Child Wellbeing,' will be hosted by the Ministry of Social Welfare on 18th May 2026 at the Maitta Civic Centre.
