In response to a journalist’s question regarding today’s announcement by the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Alexandros Papaioannou, stated the following:

“Contrary to those who conclude illegal and null and void “memoranda” that ignore and violate fundamental rules of International Law and the Law of the Sea, Greece exercises its sovereign rights in full respect of International Law and the Law of the Sea.

This is also what it has done in the EEZ delimitations with Egypt and Italy.

The obligation of Libya’s transitional government is to lead the country to elections immediately.

We look forward to working in a spirit of sincerity and mutual respect and always within the framework of the rules of International Law and the Law of the Sea with an elected Libyan government, which will have the legitimacy and authority to conclude valid International Agreements, in accordance with the 2020 Roadmap set by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF).”
