In response to a journalist’s question regarding the Turkish Foreign Ministry Spokesperson’s statement on the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Greece and Egypt on search and rescue areas, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Alexandros Papaioannou stated the following:
“Türkiye once again completely distorts reality in order to support its unilateral and unfounded claims.
In this case, the Turkish side is attempting to equate a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding, which was concluded with full respect for International Law and international rules, to its unfounded and illegal unilateral claims that violate fundamental notions of International Law.
In parallel, at a time when Türkiye is instrumentalizing the migration issue, putting human lives at risk on a daily basis, it falsely accuses our country, which is making every possible effort to protect lives at sea.
Yesterday’s signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with Egypt is precisely part of this effort by both Greece and Egypt.
We reject the unfounded Turkish claims in their entirety”.
