Minister Unveils Plans for Digital Infrastructure in Angola

Luanda: Angolan Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication, Mário Oliveira, announced the construction of the Public Keys and the country’s Time Stamp infrastructure. This announcement was made during the closing ceremony of the 2nd cycle of conferences organized by the National Bank of Angola (BNA).

According to Angola Press News Agency, the minister highlighted that the new infrastructure will be supported by relevant legislation and will facilitate the implementation of digital signatures and electronic invoices. These tools are seen as crucial for advancing the modernization and security of digital transactions within Angola.

The minister emphasized the importance of inclusive technological advancement across the nation, stating that efforts are underway to enhance digital and financial literacy. He noted that Angola currently boasts approximately 17 million mobile phone users, indicating significant penetration with about 70% of the population having access to mob
ile services. Additionally, the minister mentioned that 17 million banking services are now available.

Mário Oliveira stressed the importance of establishing trust between citizens and digital structures through efficient transactions, reasonable tariffs, and data protection within a robust technological framework. He reiterated the commitment to collaborating with the BNA and the entire Financial System to introduce modern and reliable technological solutions, ensuring that digital currency circulates securely and inclusively.

The conference was attended by experts from Central Banks, representatives from both public and private sectors, the Supervisory Council of the Financial System, financial institutions, business associations, academics, and entrepreneurs. The event aimed to provide an overview of the evolution of electronic payment instruments in the Angolan Payment System.

During the conference, diplomas of merit were awarded to financial institutions, and gifts were presented to representatives fr
om various sectors including greengrocers, taxi drivers, shopkeepers, and motorcycle taxi drivers. An exhibition showcasing different payment means and instruments was also featured.
