Freetown: The Ministry of Gender and Children's Affairs (MoGCA) has reaffirmed its commitment to rehabilitation and inclusion through a transformative initiative aimed at empowering women and girls in conflict with the law. Hon. Minister Dr. Isata Mahoi, speaking at a recent engagement, emphasized the need to provide dignity, opportunity, and access to life-changing skills for women inside correctional facilities. She highlighted the fashion and creative arts sectors as effective tools for empowerment, which can help beneficiaries rebuild confidence, achieve economic independence, and reintegrate into society with renewed purpose.
According to Sierra Leone News Agency, this initiative, organized by Isha Johansen, is part of a broader national effort to empower, reform, and rehabilitate women and girls within correctional centers. It underscores the growing importance of partnerships between government and private stakeholders in addressing social inclusion and restorative justice.
Minister Mahoi outlined key government reforms focused on strengthening institutional support systems, expanding access to vocational and skills training, improving welfare conditions, and ensuring protection for incarcerated women and girls. She stressed that these measures are essential to ensuring no individual is left behind, regardless of their circumstances.
The Ministry reiterated its unwavering dedication to creating opportunities for all women and girls to thrive. Initiatives like this are seen as foundational for a more inclusive society where second chances are not only possible but actively supported.
As Sierra Leone continues to advance its gender empowerment agenda, stakeholders remain optimistic that such interventions will contribute meaningfully to sustainable rehabilitation and long-term social transformation.
