It was a very interesting day in Rome today. First of all, I had the pleasure and honour to be received by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State (Prime Minister) of the Holy See, with whom, naturally, we discussed the preparation of Pope Francis’ visit to Greece. And, of course, we had the opportunity to review the conditions in the wider region of Eastern Mediterranean and the Western Balkans, areas of interest to the Holy See.
It was also important that I had the opportunity to meet with Mr Fassino, President of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Italian Chamber of Deputies; and then, to address the Committee and answer their questions. I had the opportunity to outline the Greek positions on the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean, on Turkish aggression and the challenges that Greece faces, the challenges that Europe faces. And I think a common ground has been found through our discussion on how these issues could be addressed.
But, of course, the challenges are always before us and continuous effort to address them is required.
