Minister Advocates Honoring National Liberation Heroes for Their Role in Angola’s Independence

Luanda: The Minister of National Defense and Veterans of the Fatherland, Joo Ernesto dos Santos 'Liberdade', emphasized the importance of honoring the heroes of the National Liberation Struggle for their critical role in securing Angola's independence and sovereignty. This statement was made on Wednesday during the flag-raising ceremony at the National Museum of Military History, marking the 65th anniversary of the Day of the Beginning of the Armed Struggle for National Liberation, in memory of the heroes of February 4, 1961.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the minister reiterated that the 1961 decision by Angolan patriots to embark on the national liberation struggle was pivotal, leading to the proclamation of independence on November 11, 1975. This milestone allows Angolans to focus on the country's development. He urged the youth to work diligently to uphold the ideals of freedom, drawing inspiration from the actions of past heroes.

Joo Ernesto dos Santos also highlighted ongoing programs designed to honor former combatants, noting their continued involvement in the Angolan Armed Forces, retirement, or as pensioners with the Social Security Institute. He affirmed the government's commitment to improving the living conditions of those who fought for independence, peace, unity, and national reconciliation.

Additionally, the minister mentioned that the 4 de Fevereiro Historical Landmark in Cazenga is under review for potential improvements. Angola is commemorating the 65th anniversary of the Beginning of the Armed Struggle for National Liberation, under the theme "Preserving the Values ??of the Fatherland, Let Us Honor Our Heroes."

The armed resistance against the Portuguese colonial regime initiated by Angolan patriots in 1961 eventually led to the declaration of National Independence on November 11, 1975.
