Minint Pledges Enhanced Prison System in Luanda

Luanda: The Ministry of the Interior (Minint) guaranteed on Friday in Luanda that in the coming months the prison system will be increasingly better suited to the challenges ahead, through the training and capacity-building of personnel and the restructuring of prison facilities according to modern models.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the announcement was made in a congratulatory message for the 47th anniversary of the Penitentiary Service (SP), signed by Interior Minister Manuel Homem. Minint emphasized that the rehabilitation process is an essential pillar for transforming individuals, preparing them for life after serving their sentences, and preventing a return to previous unlawful behaviors.

The document highlights that March 20th marks the 47th anniversary of the institutionalization of the Penitentiary Service, established in 1979. The service is tasked with ensuring compliance with measures of deprivation of liberty decreed by the justice administration bodies for citizens in conflict with the law.

The message further notes that justice administration bodies are confronting high recidivism rates, prompting the institution to intensify its focus on rehabilitation and humanization processes to address these issues effectively.

Overseen by the Ministry of the Interior, the Penitentiary Service commemorates this anniversary under the theme "Penitentiary Service 47 Years: Betting on the Modernization, Production and Humanization of Prisoners." The initiative emphasizes the complex social reintegration of incarcerated citizens, aiming to facilitate their successful return to both personal and professional life.
