Windhoek: Deputy Minister of Industries, Mines and Energy, Gaudentia Kr¶hne, has emphasized the importance of the mining sector in Namibia, urging it to create lasting national value through initiatives such as skills development, local enterprise growth, and environmental responsibility, beyond mere extraction of mineral resources.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Kr¶hne made these remarks during the launch of Swakop Uranium's 2025 Sustainability Report in Windhoek. The report, themed 'From a Decade of Growth to a Future of Possibilities', marks ten years since the Husab Mine began its uranium production. Kr¶hne highlighted that the true success of mining is not just in production figures but in its ability to build national capability, enhance skills, foster local enterprise growth, support responsible technology transfer, and uphold environmental respect.
The deputy minister stressed the necessity for mining companies to align their operations with Namibia's long-term development goals. She stated that sustainability should be integrated into decision-making processes, risk management, and value sharing within mining operations.
Kr¶hne recognized the progress reflected in the sustainability report regarding local procurement, skills development, supplier participation, environmental management, and community investment. She pointed out that uranium offers Namibia a chance to engage in the global transition to cleaner energy, ensuring local benefits.
Furthermore, Kr¶hne expressed support for Swakop Uranium's Husab+ vision, advocating for practical outcomes such as increased employment, stronger local suppliers, and greater investment in innovation and resource sustainability. She underscored the importance of preparing more Namibians for technical and leadership roles and elevating local businesses from mere participation to competitiveness.
Kr¶hne concluded by reaffirming the government's commitment to supporting responsible investment, while maintaining expectations for compliance, transparency, safety, and environmental stewardship in the mining sector.
