Minimal Challenges Recorded at Nkurenkuru Constituency

Nkurenkuru: The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN)'s Returning Officer for the Nkurenkuru Constituency, Pankratius Kawana, on Wednesday reported a smooth voting process with minimal challenges during the ongoing Regional Council and Local Authority Elections. Speaking to Nampa about the day's operations, Kawana highlighted that polling stations across the constituency, including Nkurenkuru, Siurungu, Mayara, and Kahenge, opened promptly at 07h00 with substantial voter turnout.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Kawana noted some procedural challenges, primarily involving outdated voting documentation. Several voters attempted to use voting cards issued in 2014, which were promptly confiscated as they remain the property of the ECN. "Those people can only vote when they come with valid cards," the officer explained. "Most of them could be seen as maybe trying to test something from their own perspective. We send them back to go and collect the valid voting card."

Addressing concerns about voter card discrepancies, Kawana assured that a comprehensive system was in place to prevent any voter from being disenfranchised. "When a voter's card is scanned, it might show some information which is not precisely what is on the card, like the names not aligning with the identity number on the system, but that is not a major issue," he emphasised. "Nobody will be turned away or denied the right to vote because of such a thing. Everybody will be allowed to vote."

Kawana said that by midday, preliminary numbers indicated significant participation. At the Nkurenkuru Community Hall polling station, two ballot books were already completed, with the third book approximately halfway through, suggesting over 200 voters had cast their votes. A similar high turnout was reported at Siurungu and Kahenge polling stations.

The Returning Officer particularly noted the Kurisuka polling station as a "hotspot" with a large voter turnout, underscoring the constituency's active electoral engagement. The election continues, with the ECN maintaining vigilance and commitment to a transparent democratic process, Kawana said.
