Windhoek: The Regional Councils and Local Authorities Elections concluded successfully on Wednesday, with minimal challenges reported at most polling stations. Voting commenced at 07h00 and ended at 21h00, with all registered voters present in the queues by 21h00 having cast their votes.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Azzette Simon, the returning officer for the Windhoek East Constituency, confirmed a significant voter turnout since the process began in the morning. "We have concluded the voting with a satisfactory turnout; the process has been smooth and without any challenges," she stated. Simon further noted that the presence of numerous polling stations facilitated a swift voting process, allowing voters more options for where to cast their ballots. She indicated that vote counting has commenced, with final results anticipated to be released around 01h00.
Matheus Mhani, the returning officer for the Windhoek Rural Constituency, corroborated Simon's observations, stating that all individuals who arrived to vote were accommodated. He also reported a substantial turnout in his constituency. However, he mentioned that due to the locations of certain polling teams, they would only be able to travel to the coalition centre at Groot Aub's Salvation Church for the final count on Thursday morning.
Mhani attributed the smooth operation of this election to the fact that voters cast their ballots within their respective constituencies and localities, in contrast to last year when voters had the flexibility to vote anywhere. He indicated that final results are expected on Thursday.
