Dedougou: Military prosecutor Commander Amed Sountoura declared that the army does not operate with impunity. He made this statement during a mobile court hearing held from November 19 to 21, 2025, in Dedougou. The hearings aimed to bring the institution closer to the public and to improve understanding of how military justice functions within a security context marked by numerous requests from the defense and security forces.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the military prosecutor, Commander Amed Sountoura, stated that this relocated session serves a dual purpose: to raise awareness among civil and military authorities about the mechanisms of military justice and to promote a better understanding of the criminal responsibilities applicable to the various actors involved in the fight against insecurity.
"Mobile court hearings are an important educational tool. They allow citizens to better understand the standards, duties and limits set by law," he said. During the three days of hearings, 14 cases were scheduled, including 3 of a criminal nature. Following deliberations, the court handed down three convictions for offenses ranging from murder to complicity in murder.
The prosecutor welcomed the interest shown by the participants, believing that the discussions fully achieved the goal of raising awareness. The case most followed by the public concerned Volunteers for the Defence of the Homeland (VDP) prosecuted for mutilation and violation of the respect due to the dead. Although murder charges were not upheld, the defendants were found guilty of desecration, sparking a debate on ethics, discipline and conduct in a combat context.
The military prosecutor reiterated that neither the security forces nor civilians are above the law, particularly regarding the use of force. Commander Amed Sountoura stressed the need for proportionate use of weapons and reminded everyone of the existence of disciplinary sanctions and legal proceedings in case of abuse.
"The army does not operate with impunity. Every breach is dealt with in accordance with the rules," he assured, calling on the population to maintain its confidence in the military institution. For the organizers, this mobile court hearing demonstrates the military tribunal's desire to strengthen its connection with citizens, promote transparency, and contribute to establishing a climate of trust essential to addressing current security challenges.
Commander Sountoura finally urged the population to collaborate more with the defense and security forces, believing that this synergy is essential to effectively combat insecurity.
