Migori: People with Disabilities (PwD) from Migori County are embracing a new path towards economic empowerment following a sensitisation initiative. David Otieno, the County Chairperson for People with Disabilities (PWD), said that the new path to economic empowerment will further unite their union into a stronger, organised and focused group aimed at improving their livelihoods.
According to Kenya News Agency, the initiative aims to create a platform for collaboration, unity and togetherness, giving members a collective voice and renewed hope for a better future. The official urged PWD living in Migori to register with their union to give them one voice and enable them to access both county and national government opportunities with ease. 'We have, for the longest time, been overlooked or unfairly perceived when seeking help individually. This is an opportunity to correct this so that we can benefit from tenders and job opportunities', said Otieno.
Leaders of the Migori Empowerment Network, led by George Akede, have committed to ensuring full registration and inclusion of all PWD for easier identification and future endeavours. He noted that many PWD from the county are engaging in small businesses to improve their livelihoods, and with proper union, they can be assisted to access more business opportunities and jobs.
The official called upon development partners and the two levels of government to give support to People Living with Disabilities to boost their economic efforts. Otieno also noted that the formation of an empowerment group is the beginning of a new era of inclusion, dignity, and economic empowerment for the PWD in the County.
