Migori: Suba Council of Elders from Migori have welcomed the move by Migori County to build an office for the community. Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony at Kabubu area in Suna West Sub-County, Migori-Suba Council of Elders member, Japheth Riogi Riogi, emphasized the need for a dedicated space for the community to convene and address their issues.
According to Kenya News Agency, Riogi highlighted the importance of having a suitable environment for the Suba community to deliberate on cultural and traditional matters, resolve disputes, and educate future generations on their language. He expressed concerns about the assimilation of their people and the diminishing knowledge of their traditions, stressing that the new office will play a crucial role in revitalizing these aspects.
Riogi also revealed plans for a museum and library on allocated land in Nyamaraga, Suna West Sub-County, to further preserve and showcase Suba heritage. He urged local politicians to support rather than interfere with the community's efforts to preserve their culture and language.
During the Piny Luo festival in December 2025, the Suba community was recognized for their cultural contributions, demonstrating their valued place within the broader Luo community. Migori County Executive Committee Member for Health, Caleb Opondi, representing Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko, announced that the office building would be completed in three months, signifying the county's dedication to cultural preservation.
Opondi stated that the facility will serve as a permanent hub for the elders to fulfill their advisory and cultural leadership roles, while also promoting social cohesion and community governance. The county's initiative reflects a commitment to inclusive development and the safeguarding of cultural heritage for future generations.
