Migori County Launches Governor’s Cup Football Competition to Foster Unity and Talent

Migori, Kenya – The Governor’s Cup Football Competition, a highly anticipated event aimed at fostering unity and showcasing young football talent, has been officially launched in Migori County. The inaugural ceremony took place at the Migori stadium, with Migori Deputy Governor Joseph Mahiri in attendance.

According to Kenya News Agency, the tournament will feature both women’s and men’s teams from all 40 wards across the 12 Sub Counties of Migori. He called on residents to support the event, which promises to be a thrilling showcase of grassroots football talent and a beacon of hope for emerging players.

Mahiri emphasized the significance of the tournament in promoting unity and developing talent within the county. He shared that the event organizers are committed to bringing the community together through sports and have ensured adequate facilitation for all participating teams. This includes providing balls, tents, seats, and drinking water for players’ comfort during the tournament.

The Deputy Governor also announced that each participating team would receive uniforms and balls, with the winning team, first runners-up, and third place being awarded Sh50,000, Sh40,000, and Sh20,000, respectively.

Suna Central Member of County Assembly (MCA) Samwel O’Brien expressed that the county has made considerable investments to ensure the success of the tournament. O’Brien highlighted the tournament’s role in engaging youths positively, steering them away from activities like drug abuse and criminal acts.

The County Assembly Legislature also noted that the tournament aims to unearth and nurture young talent, enabling participants to compete at national levels and use sports as a means of livelihood.

Rahab Robi, Migori County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Sports, Education, and Gender, recognized the Governor’s Cup as a vital platform for nurturing young talents and elevating their passion and dreams in sports. Robi remarked, “This tournament will have no winners nor losers, as our aim is to advocate for a peaceful county where every resident lives in harmony.”

The finals of the Governor’s Cup tournament are scheduled for December 14 at the Migori Green Stadium, where the winning teams will be awarded trophies.
