Meru Muguka Traders Relocate to Ugweri Market After Eviction from Siakago

Embu: Muguka traders from Meru have found a new market in Ugweri, Runyenjes Constituency, after being evicted from Siakago Town in Mbeere North Constituency.

According to Kenya News Agency, the eviction followed a violent clash with the local Mbeere Community, sparked by suspicions that the traders were involved in a rise in motorcycle thefts in the area. The tension led to a two-day conflict that left six people injured and resulted in the destruction and looting of businesses and property belonging to the Meru traders.

The clashes have strained relations between the two communities, which had previously coexisted peacefully and engaged in business together. Efforts by security agencies and government officials, including Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku, to resolve the situation have not provided relief to the traders, who reported receiving no government support during the unrest.

Despite settling in Ugweri Market, the traders continue to feel the impact of their losses, which they allege were politically motivated. Christopher Kiura, a trader, expressed frustration over the lack of protection from security agencies during the looting and destruction of their property. He questioned why security reinforcements were not provided if the attack was not politically driven.

The traders have expressed gratitude towards the Ugweri community and area MP Muchangi Karemba for welcoming them and providing a space to conduct their trade. George Gitonga, another trader, highlighted the warm reception and noted that business has picked up since their relocation, with locals optimistic about the potential economic benefits for the area.
