Meridiam, in partnership with the Republic of Togo and EDF, has secured a 25-year concession agreement for the development of a 64 MWp solar power plant in Sokodé, central Togo. This initiative marks a significant step towards increasing access to clean energy in the region.
According to the Africa News Agency, The solar plant, set to be constructed and operated by Meridiam, will provide renewable energy to over 700,000 people in Sokodé and neighboring rural areas, who currently have limited access to electricity. The project is expected to generate more than 200 local jobs during its construction and operational phases.
Scheduled to commence construction in mid-2024, the solar power plant aligns with Togo’s national goal of ensuring universal energy access by 2030, enhancing the country’s renewable energy capacity to 50% by 2025. The plant will also play a role in reducing carbon emissions, avoiding over 1.4 million tonnes of CO2 throughout its operational lifespan.
