Men for change reaches out to communities

The Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Lt Gen Nomthetheleli Mene led a delegation of men from the SAPS in the eight districts of the Eastern Cape Province who attended the annual Men For Change (MFC) Convention in Mthatha on Monday, which was followed by operations in the OR Tambo District the following day.

A delegation of over 300 men from the eight districts converged at the OR Tambo Municipality Hall in Mthatha, with a theme: "Uphi Ndoda?" (where are you man?). The Convention addressed the challenges of gender-based violence, and other issues that are pertinent to men such as men wellness.

A comprehensive presentation by a social worker, Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Nqumashe, who is attached to the Provincial Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) on men health and wellness stole the attention of male attendees. It was unanimously agreed that her presentation should be cascaded to the districts, with an extended audience.

A one-day convention was the first convention after the Covid-19 outbreak, which was also attended by the National Men For Change Executive Committee, and its sister structure, Women's Network, which was led by Brigadier TK Moeng. The National Men For Change delegation was led by Colonel S Nqaphi, who is also the Eastern Cape Provincial Champion.

The attendees of the elegant event, who were in their trademark black and white outfits continued with the session on commissions until late in the evening. The deliberations and recommendations of the convention are to be presented to the SAPS Provincial Senior Management.

The following day (Tuesday, 23 May 2023), the Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Mene led her foot soldiers in operations, which were conducted simultaneous in various areas of OR Tambo District, with a special focus in Mthatha.

Men For Change ended its activities with a social responsibility initiative. The team visited Bethany Home of Safety in Mthatha, and handed over a clothing donation to the home. Several schools were also visited, and learners were addressed on bullying and gender-based violence.
