Memorandum of Understanding Signed to Aid Vulnerable Populations in Sierra Leone


Freetown: In a significant stride toward systemic social reform, the longstanding, collaborative relationship between the Ministry of Social Welfare and Plan International was formally codified through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement transcends mere procedural formality to embody a deepened, strategic commitment to confronting the profound challenges facing Sierra Leone’s most vulnerable citizens.

According to Sierra Leone News Agency, Mr. Peter Koroma, Head of Program Development and Quality for Plan International Sierra Leone, explained the purpose of the MoU. He stated that it officially cements a collaborative relationship focused on addressing the needs of vulnerable populations. He emphasized that working with key ministries like Social Welfare is essential to their mission, particularly in issues concerning children and social welfare.

Country Director Madam Muniratu Issitu expressed her privilege in formalizing the partnership. She highlighted the MoU as a framework to guide coll
aboration, build capacity, and provide psychosocial support. Key areas of focus will include combating the “kush” drug epidemic and safeguarding policies to improve support for young people and vulnerable groups.

In her statement, the Honorable Minister of Social Welfare, Madam Melrose Karminty, described the event as a significant milestone. She affirmed that no ministry can work in isolation and praised the complementary role of organizations like Plan International. The Ministry’s mandate covers a wide range of vulnerable groups, including children, youth, women, the aged, and immigrants. The Minister noted the persistent challenges of substance abuse and violence, expressing confidence that the MoU will bring positive effects and enhance the Ministry’s efforts.

This agreement marks a strengthened commitment to jointly serve the most vulnerable in Sierra Leone.
