Meguet: To celebrate the 2026 edition of the Day of Customs and Traditions, His Majesty Naba Saaga of M©guet made a sacrifice to the land and the ancestors, asking for peace for the country and abundance for his community. A report on this highly solemn traditional ceremony.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the event began at 7:15 am in the royal court of M©guet, situated 25 km north of Zorgho, the capital of the Ganzourgou province. The palace of His Majesty Naba Saaga was illuminated by the morning sun as he prepared to perform a sacrifice deeply rooted in tradition and respect for the ancestors.
The setting was marked by a solemn atmosphere, with attendees including brokers and dignitaries dressed in boubous, filling the courtyard to witness the ceremony. Offerings of chickens and a ram were presented to the chief, along with a calabash of dolo, a traditional millet beer.
Local officials, led by Yacouba Ouattara, the town hall's secretary general, joined the ceremony, warmly greeted by Naba Saaga. The gathering emphasized unity on this day dedicated to customs and traditions, as established by the President of Burkina Faso.
The Samand©, the heart of the ritual, became the focal point as the procession advanced. The tingsoaba, or day's sacrifice, led the group, with the ceremony watched from a distance by officials and onlookers. The sacrifice was set to occur on the bare earth, with essential elements like millet flour water and dolo nearby.
In a moment of silence, the tingsoaba began incantations in Moore, invoking Mother Earth and the ancestors. Through these rituals, prayers were made for the population's health, protection for the country's leaders, and a successful rainy season.
The ceremony's symbolic element involved the sacrifice of a white chicken, its blood spread on the ground. The bird's movements were closely watched, and its eventual behavior was interpreted as a favorable sign, indicating the ancestors' approval. This was followed by the sacrifice of a red chicken, a ram, and a black-and-white chicken, each reinforcing this positive omen.
Naba Saaga expressed gratitude towards the authorities for this day, emphasizing the importance of a fruitful rainy season and urging the youth to preserve their customs. He highlighted the role of the younger generation in keeping traditions alive, stating, "If the younger generation is not interested in our customs, it will be difficult for the old."
Yacouba Ouattara noted the significance of the municipal authorities' presence, equating it to other religious observances where officials attend. He emphasized the need for traditionalists to foster peace and social cohesion.
The Day of Customs in M©guet was a moment where tradition and community spirit converged, with the ancestors seemingly offering their blessings for the future.
