Medical Team Conducts Tuberculosis Screening at Manga Detention Center

Zoundweogo: As part of the ongoing activities marking World Tuberculosis Day, 2026 edition, a medical team visited the Manga Detention and Correction Center (MACM) on April 16, 2026 for a screening and awareness campaign. Under the theme "Yes! We can end tuberculosis!", this initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen the fight against the disease in prisons. It follows an initial outreach event held on April 9, 2026, at the P´ prison.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the medical team, led by Dr. Ragnagwende Tanguy Nikiema and Dr. Gilbert Nongkouni, conducted free screenings for tuberculosis and other pulmonary diseases for inmates and prison staff. This activity was organized by the Burkina Faso Society of Pulmonology (SOBUP) in collaboration with the Manga Regional Hospital Center (CHR).

In addition to screening, awareness sessions were organized focusing on respiratory hygiene measures and the warning signs of the disease. Speakers emphasized the importance of early detection to break the chain of tuberculosis transmission. According to the Deputy Secretary for Training/Research at SOBUP, Dr. Ragnagwende Tanguy Nikiema, this approach reflects the desire of health actors to bring health services closer to vulnerable populations, particularly those in prison.

The director of MACM, the prison security inspector, Oumarou Demi, welcomed this initiative, stressing that it contributes to the health protection of inmates and staff.
