MEDIA STATEMENT: POWERS AND PRIVILEGES COMMITTEE POSTPONES HEARING ON INCIDENT OF 30 AUGUST 2022

The Powers and Privileges Committee today postponed the hearing on the incident that took place at the Good Hope Chamber during the proceedings of the National Assembly on 30 August 2022, where members of Economic Freedom Fighters were physically removed from the sitting.

The members are charged with contempt of Parliament. The hearing has been postponed until further notice due to the withdrawal for personal reasons of the initiator, Adv Norman Arendse SC.

The Office of the State Attorneys has been requested to begin the process of obtaining the services of a new initiator. The committee has appealed to the parliamentary administration to ensure that the matter receives urgent attention and called for the process to be fast-tracked to avoid delaying the administration of justice, as the matter was referred to the committee by the National Assembly Speaker some time ago.

The Chairperson of the committee, Ms Violet Siwela, assured members of the committee that the appointment of the new initiator will b
e fast-tracked and the process will be accelerated to avoid unnecessary delay of the administration of justice, as called for by members.
