The Portfolio Committee on Transport has noted with deep sadness the passing of 22 people, some of whom are mineworkers, in a bus accident in Limpopo.
The Chairperson of the committee, Ms Mina Lesoma, said it is heart wrenching to see so many people perish in such a fashion as being in an accident and burn. “The committee extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the affected and may their lives rest in eternal peace. We support the provincial department of transport in its efforts of finding out what happened.”
Ms Lesoma called on government to provide the best possible support services, particularly identification, which may be required by the families as they prepare for the burial of their loved ones.
“Furthermore, the committee also notes with appreciation the proactive manner with which the Minister of the Department of Transport, Ms Sindi Chikunga, and MEC, Ms Faith Radzilani, approached the matter by visiting the accident site, notwithstanding that this is unwritten expectation or mandate. It was just born out of ubuntu,” said Ms Lesoma.
The accident reportedly occurred on Sunday when a bus ferrying workers to Venetia mine, near Musina, was involved in a head on collision. Ms Lesoma called on the employers of the victims to correctly fulfil their commitment to the workers and compliment the support government is providing.
She also called on road users to take full responsibility and make road safety their everyday business. “That is the best possible way with which ordinary citizens could support road safety initiatives, and in the process save lives. We all need to be responsible and vigilant on how we conduct ourselves on the roads.”
